May 4-5 will be the 24th anniversary of the Keels & Wheels Concours d' Elegance at Lakewood Yacht Club.

This is a fantastic event that benefits the Today's Harbor for Children. I know of a few of GBCA members that will have their boat's and/or cars presented. I will have my wooden Tornado displayed and I know "Leading Edge" will be "where the party never ends". But more importantly, it is a great way to spend the day wondering around admiring the hard work these people have put into their passion. They will have vendors scattered around for you to spend some money as well.

You can get more information at www.Keels-Wheels.com

Galveston Bay Area Racing / Obstruction in Kemah Channel
February 25, 2019, 08:23:19 PM
Some of you might have seen the FB thread about an obstruction in the Kemah channel in between markers 5 and 6.

From someone who hit the obstruction, the coordinates are 29° 32.991'N and 095° 0.463'W.

I have seen posts about prop blades being broken off to hull damage.  I have reached out to one of our divers to see if they would be willing to dive it and find out what it really it. From the coordinates, it appears to be center of the channel.

As some of you heard, I am working with the other clubs to establish a Women's Series on Galveston Bay.

We are not adding anymore races on Galveston Bay, but merely scoring the existing races as a series to be awarded at the end of the year. We will have the notice of series out soon.

Right now, there are 5 women's regattas on Galveston Bay. We are not changing any of the requirements for the individual regatta trophies, but looking to expand some of the criteria to qualify for an overall trophy.

The qualifying regattas are:
- HYC Mermaid Regatta
- HYC Catherine Spiller
- HYC Fairfax Moody
- GBCA Women's
- TASS Carol Becker

Do you think you have the best jambalaya or gumbo recipe? Now is your time to prove it!!!! We are having a jambalaya and gumbo contest Saturday March 9th after the races. Contestants are asked to bring at least 1-2 gallons of either jambalaya or gumbo to be judged and shared. We will have your peers vote to nominate you as the Mardi Gras King or Queen...

Wear your best beads, masks, and/or (family friendly) costumes Saturday evening.

Do you want to win a FREE ENTRY FEE to Texas Race Week? We are going to make Offshore Racing Great Again.... You must be present to participate and win...

If you are not able to race March 9 or 10th... no big deal.. you are still invited to come enjoy the party Saturday evening.

Yes, for the Spring Series Mardi Gras Regatta, we will have jambalaya, gumbo, zydeco, King Cake, beads, costumes, and a chance to win a free entry in GBCA's Texas Race Week....

Spots are filling quickly for the Commodore's Ball...

Have never been? No problem.

If you have attended any of GBCA's Rum Race or Icicle parties; just like that except everyone is showered and smells better.

What to expect ~
Dress Code: Men typically wear a sport jacket to suit to tuxedo (I'll be in a tux). Women will wear evening gowns to cocktail dresses. (Most bring a change of shoes to dance in)

Activity: We start the evening with everyone's "glamor shots" as they enter. Social conversations will commence until dinner is served. Annual awards will be recognized with a slide show. The band usually plays during the social time and after the awards. After the awards is when everyone begins to dance and congratulate each other for their awards.

Last year we had a waiting list for registrations. Be sure to register and save your spot.

The GBCA Spring Series Regatta NOR is posted: http://www.regattanetwork.com/clubmgmt/regatta_uploads/18144/2019SpringSeriesNOR.pdf

We are taking handicap racing back old-school for Galveston Bay's only 2-day regatta with triangle windward/leeward courses. One-design classes will be offered windward/leeward courses with moveable marks while the handicap classes will be going around fixed and/or moveable marks. These will not be the hardcore races we did in the 80s and 90s, but they will be long enough that one can rest and take a breather after a maneuver. I am looking to reintroduce reach-to-reach jybes, barberhaulers and possibly reef points....
