Galveston Bay Area Racing / 2012 Icicle Race Instructions
December 08, 2011, 05:55:14 AM
Are the Icicle Race start times and instructions posted as yet?  I'd hate to start the year behind already!

You may have an old chart. The two boater cuts I've used are at HSC 61-62 (South Cut) and HSC
71-72 (North Cut).

There are 2 restaurants in Double Bayou.  The trip takes about 3.5-4 hrs.  One is called Marker 17 and the other is The Hurricane.  There is a marked channel which averages 6-9 feet in depth.  There is also a marina with 16 slips available at 25 bucks per night which provides 30 and 50 amp shore power.  The hotel, general store, pavillion and marina were all built after Hurricane Ike.  We were there 11/6-11/7 this year and had no problems.  TMCA goes there quite often and many of their boats draw over 6 ft. If you go from Clear Creek Marker 2 thru the North Boaters Cut direct Double Bayou Marker 2 its almost a straight shot. Many of us will motor further up the river and tie off to trees, set up a camp fire and spend the night as well.

General Discussion / The Junk Yard Got Us
October 23, 2011, 04:48:23 PM
Broke our shaft and split our strut and bent the prop on our way to Rum 8 on 9/24.  Barely made it out of Portofino.  New shaft, fixed strut, rebalanced prop and ready to go as of today!  Must have wrapped something around the strut and shaft and it ate us up!  Oh well, there goes the Christmas cash..Nice to be functional again.

Galveston Bay Area Racing / Rum Race Finish Time
August 25, 2011, 06:11:11 PM
Lil Bit A Sol finished 19:59:28.  Passed to Kevin last Sunday via E Mail.  Must have gotten lost. He did acknowledge my e mail.. Sorry for the late info..

I Think you got third because of the Santa Claus PHRF rating of 179.  Your spin rating is 156 which means you are getting a 23 sec. per mile bonus.  This gives you a 5 min. head start.. BUT.. If I had it I'd use it too! Our base is 187 and we're currently rated at 167.  We ain't gonna win with this...Also Stellar Of Course flew spin and has a PHRF of 153 (spin) and got rated with a fat 209.  That's a 12 min head start for him.. OUCH!!

Welcome S/V Meris.  You all sure looked comfortable last week.  Please show up at the party afterwards and make yourselves known!
Will the members utilizing this website please refer to us as Cruising Class.  We don't fly blue and white tags on our backstays!!

To add a suggestion to Terry Youngs' advice..  I keep a current copy of all registered cruising class boats on board.  If your boat is fortunate enough to finish first, it is easier to match up the sail number then trying to look for a boat name or the elusive flag.  The days are getting shorter which will make identifying names, flags, and sail numbers even more difficult.  Most boats were finished before 745pm.  Last Sept. we had boats finishing at 8:30pm in the dark.  This becomes somewhat challenging for the 1st place boat. If all you do is write down times and sail numbers, we can figure it out later at the party in the light with rum in hand.  Just a thought here...

A truly disgusting time for Lil Bit A Sol as we crawled across at 20:48:53.  The lack of wind on the first leg made for a real challenge. Starting at 17:11:16, we dropped right in to a prolonged "no wind" hole that seemed to last forever.. Oh well, there's 4 Rums left......Good time on the water just the same and the sloppy joes were good afterwards.
